Short Term Phaco Training


At Sagarmatha Choudhary Eye Hospital, Lahan

Introduction: Cataract surgical tecnnque has changed over the last decades from intracapsular cataract extraction wen aphakic spectacles to Phacoemulsification (phaco) with implantation of intraocular lenses. Nowadays eye patients demand modern eye surgery with good visual outcome and fast visual recovery at an affordable cost.

At the same time opthalmologists are keen to learn cataract surgery by Phacoemulsification technique. Every year more than 10,000 Phaco surgeries are performed at Sagarmatha Choudhary Eye Hospital. In 2014, surgical training center was established at Sagarmatha Choudhary Eye Hospital with the support from OERTLI Switzerland to train the ophthalmologist in various technique of cataract surgery (SICS and Phaco). The objective of short term phacoemulsification training is to convert SICS surgeon into Phaco surgeon. The training is supervised by senior instructor until surgeon gains confidence to perform phaco surgery independently on simple uncomplicated cataract cases.

Course Outline: This program trains eye surgeons in this cutting-edge method of cataract surgery. The trainees are trained in sequential graded steps, performing phacoemulsification first under supervision, and then independently. The training also includes pre-operative work-up and post-operative care of patients.

Course Schedule: 4 weeks

1st week: Observing Phaco and performing Capsulorrhexis
2nd week: Phacoemulsification Step by step surgery under supervision
3rd and 4th week: Independent surgery

Eligibility Criteria: Qualified practicing Ophthalmologist with MD/DO/FRAS/DNB degree from recognized university with good experience in manual SICS surgery.

Pre-Requisites: The applicant must be proficient in (Capsulorhhexis)
No. of Positions: 1-2 per batch
Selection:Selection is done on a first come first served basis

Admission Procedure: Application for the programs should be accompanied by curriculum vitae, copies of certificates and application form.

Logistics

Accommodation: Basic Accommodation will be provided in the hospital premises.
Food: Food will be provided at the hospital canteen. Payment on actual basis
